How a Tongariro Crossing Shuttle Day Works

From an early pickup to the last bus out of Ketetahi.

  1. Book the shuttle and the track

Reserve a seat for your date, then complete the Department of Conservation's free booking for the walk itself.

  2. Early pickup or park at Ketetahi

Return shuttles collect you from your accommodation; park-and-ride shuttles leave from the Ketetahi end, where your car waits.

  3. Walk Mangatepopo to Ketetahi

The drop-off is the Mangatepopo road end. The 19.4 km track crosses Red Crater and the Emerald Lakes and ends at Ketetahi.

  4. Catch the afternoon pickup

Return shuttles collect at Ketetahi on set afternoon runs. Miss the last one and you pay for your own way back.

Crossing Day, Step by Step

A Return Shuttle Day from National Park Village

The shuttle rides are short. The walk between the drop-off at Mangatepopo and the pickup at Ketetahi takes most people 7 to 8 hours in summer, so the morning pickup you choose decides how much time you have on the track.

  1. Book the shuttle and the DOC track booking — Reserve the shuttle on GetYourGuide (you can pay later and cancel free up to 24 hours ahead), then make DOC's free track booking online. Shuttle operators may carry only walkers who hold one, so keep the receipt to show rangers at the car park.
  2. Check the forecast the day before — In summer, DOC assesses the Red Crater forecast at 6 am and marks the crossing Not Recommended Today in strong wind or heavy rain. Look at DOC's track page and GeoNet's volcanic alert level, and buy breakfast and lunch the day before, because National Park Village has no cafes or supermarkets open early.
  3. Early pickup in National Park Village — The shuttle collects you from your accommodation. Tongariro Crossing Shuttles' own site lists departures at 5:45, 7:15, 8:30 and 9:45 am; the listing suggests an early shuttle if you walk slowly. Confirm the time on your voucher. The drive to the start takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes.
  4. Drop-off at Mangatepopo, 1,120 m — You start on the south-west side of the mountains. If the toilet queue at the car park is long, the next toilets are about 1 km on, roughly 20 minutes' walk. Toilets on the track have no paper, so bring your own, along with 2 to 3 liters of water: DOC says water on the track is not safe to drink.
  5. Up to Red Crater, 1,886 m — The track climbs about 800 m from the start to Red Crater, the highest point, past South Crater. Loose rock on Red Crater is the main slip hazard. Iwi ask walkers not to climb the summits of Ngauruhoe or Tongariro, so stay on the marked track.
  6. Emerald Lakes and Blue Lake — Past Red Crater the track passes the Emerald Lakes and Blue Lake. Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro ask visitors not to touch or enter any of the lakes or waterways, and the geothermal ground around them is dangerous.
  7. Down to Ketetahi Road, 760 m — The descent drops about 1,100 m past the Te Maari craters to the road end on the north side. A 10-year rāhui covers the area burned in the late-2025 fires, so keep to the track and take your rubbish home.
  8. The afternoon pickup at Ketetahi — Tongariro Crossing Shuttles' own site lists returns from 1:30 pm until 5:30 pm. A few reviewers who finished quickly waited a couple of hours for the next run, so a later morning pickup suits fast walkers. Know which run is the last one before you set off.
  9. If the weather closes in — The operator makes the weather call, and shuttle operators must follow DOC's weather alerts. If you need to cancel, a GetYourGuide booking refunds in full up to 24 hours ahead. Keep the next day free so you can move your crossing.

Where to Stay

Where to Stay for the Tongariro Crossing

Most Tongariro Crossing shuttles collect from National Park Village and Turangi, so sleep in one of those, or in Ohakune if you prefer a larger town.

National Park Village

The closest base, about 21 minutes from the Mangatepopo car park, and the village the most return shuttles collect from, several from named lodges. It is small, so book ahead and eat early.

Turangi

A town with shops and restaurants, about 20 to 25 minutes from the Ketetahi car park, with a shuttle that collects from 15 local properties (seasonal from November, minimum two people). Taupō is the bigger-town alternative, roughly an hour from Ketetahi.

  • Tongariro River Motel · Rooms with full kitchen, free bikes and parking; 2297 ft from the centre of Turangi.
  • Creel Lodge · Self-contained suites with kitchen; 5 min walk to Turangi centre; shuttle service (charges apply).
  • Tongariro Lodge · Riverside lodge on 22 acres with restaurant and open fire; rooms have heating.

Ohakune

A ski town on the southern side of Ruapehu, about 45 minutes from Mangatepopo, with its own return shuttle to the Crossing. The drive is longer than from National Park Village, so allow for an earlier start.

Before You Book

How to Get to and From the Tongariro Crossing

Return shuttle or park-and-ride, which town to sleep in, the parking and booking rules, and the weather call that decides the day.

Most walkers either take a return shuttle from their accommodation or drive to the Ketetahi end and ride a park-and-ride to the start. The shuttle we feature is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing: Hike Trail Roundtrip Shuttle with Tongariro Crossing Shuttles. It picks you up in National Park Village in the morning, drops you at Mangatepopo and brings you back from Ketetahi in the afternoon, for $42 per person. Rated 4.7 from 882 reviews, it is the most-reviewed crossing shuttle on GetYourGuide (our breakdown). Book it for the first day of your stay and keep the next day free, because no shuttle runs when the mountain forecast is bad.

Prices here are US dollars per person on GetYourGuide, checked October 2026. Operators quote NZ dollars on their own sites, so their figures look higher.

Why the crossing needs transport

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a one-way track. You start at Mangatepopo, at 1,120 m on the south-west side, climb to Red Crater at 1,886 m, and come down to Ketetahi Road at 760 m on the north side. DOC’s figure for the distance is about 19.4 km, which several operators round to 20 km, and most people take 7 to 8 hours in summer. The two road ends are far apart by road, so you need a ride at one end or both.

Parking at the start does not solve it. DOC says there is no parking for Crossing walkers at Mangatepopo in summer, and local sources describe a four-hour limit there. Either way, a car left at Mangatepopo cannot wait out a full crossing. Our Tongariro Crossing parking guide covers where a car can wait.

Return shuttle or park-and-ride

A return shuttle collects you from your accommodation early, drops you at Mangatepopo and collects you at Ketetahi in the afternoon. It suits you if you have no car. The limit is the clock at the finish: you ride back on one of the operator’s afternoon runs. Tongariro Crossing Shuttles’ own site lists returns from 1:30 pm until 5:30 pm, and one reviewer who finished in under five hours faced a two-hour wait at Ketetahi for the next run. Take an early pickup if you walk slowly, and ask which return is the last one.

A park-and-ride works the other way round. You drive to the Ketetahi end, leave the car, ride about 30 minutes to Mangatepopo and walk back to your own car, with no afternoon timetable to meet. Four listings sell it. The Owhango Adventures one-way shuttle costs $37 (4.8 from 294 reviews), and so does the park-and-ride option on the Tongariro Expeditions listing (4.7 from 415). The Active Outdoor Adventures shuttle with a private car park costs $39 (4.3 from 77), and its listing gives departures at 6, 7, 8 and 9 am. The Ruapehu Scenic Shuttles park-and-ride costs $42 (4.8 from 652). Owhango Adventures and Ruapehu Scenic Shuttles both offer free roadside parking near Ketetahi, but DOC advises against parking on state highways. A private, monitored car park near Ketetahi is the alternative, and it reopens for the season on 24 October 2026. The Ketetahi park-and-ride page compares the four.

Which town to sleep in

National Park Village is the closest base, 13.5 km from the crossing by DOC’s road distances, and it has the most shuttles. Besides the featured shuttle, Dempsey Buses’ round-trip shuttle picks up at seven named lodges and stops in the village for $51 (4.8 from 71 reviews). Adrift notes that the village is small, with no cafes or supermarkets open early in the morning, so buy breakfast and lunch the day before. See the National Park Village shuttle page.

Ohakune is 48 km away by DOC’s figures, roughly 45 to 55 minutes on the road. Dempsey Buses runs a return shuttle from Ohakune for $62, rated 4.8 from 19 reviews. The Ohakune shuttle page covers it.

Turangi is 36.7 km away and Taupō 86.5 km. From either, allow roughly an hour each way including pickups. The Shuttle From Taupo option on the Tongariro Expeditions listing costs $74. In Turangi, Backyard Tours lists 15 accommodation pickups for $68, but it has only 3 reviews at 3.9, its first bookable date is 9 November 2026, and it needs at least two people. The Taupō and Turangi shuttle page compares them with driving yourself to a park-and-ride.

From Auckland, plan on about 4.5 to 5 hours by road and at least one night near the park. The Kiwi Road Tours private transfer ($340 per person) is transport only, so you still need a crossing shuttle; see the Auckland page. Our guide to where to stay for the Tongariro Crossing compares the towns.

The DOC booking and the fees

DOC runs a free online track booking. It is recommended for everyone, and it is required if you take a shuttle or join a guided walk, because operators may carry only walkers who hold one. It is not a permit: there is no cap on numbers and no penalty for arriving without one. Book online or at a visitor center, and keep the receipt to show rangers at the car park.

Walking the crossing costs nothing. Operators pay DOC a concession fee and a $3 per-visitor community contribution charge, which they may pass on in the fare. A charge for international visitors has been proposed, but it is not law, and DOC cannot charge it until the bill passes. No amount or start date has been confirmed.

Weather and the spare day

In summer, DOC assesses the weather at 6 am each day using the Red Crater forecast for 9 am to 5 pm. It marks the crossing “Not Recommended Today” when the forecast shows an average wind of 55 km/h or more, gusts of 70 km/h or more, rain of 2.5 mm an hour or more, or 10 mm or more over six hours. Shuttle operators must follow these weather alerts under their DOC concession. DOC counted 70 hazardous-weather days in the 2025/26 summer, so keep a spare day in your plans.

GetYourGuide bookings on these shuttles cancel free up to 24 hours ahead, and several listings offer a full refund or a transfer to another day when they cancel for weather. Check GeoNet’s volcanic alert level as well as the forecast. The main season runs from Labour Weekend to 30 April. Shuttles generally do not run in winter, when DOC calls alpine skills and equipment essential. The weather and best time guide goes through the seasons. When your dates are fixed, check availability for the featured shuttle.

What a shuttle costs

On GetYourGuide, park-and-ride seats cost $37 to $42 per person. Return shuttles cost $42 and $51 from National Park Village, $62 from Ohakune, $68 from Turangi and $74 from Taupō. Guided crossings cost several times more: Adrift’s Premium Guided Hike is $255 for a 9-hour day from National Park Village (our breakdown), and DOC recommends a guide from May to late October. The shuttle price guide lists every option by price.

If two options still look alike, our guide to which Tongariro Crossing shuttle to book sets all ten side by side with a pick for each kind of walker.

What Hikers Say

4.7/5 from 882 verified GetYourGuide hikers

Ratings and review counts are the operators' live figures on GetYourGuide and may shift slightly day to day.

"We got lucky with the weather, overpacking gear in anticipation of the rain. The shuttle arrived in a timely manner and dropped us to and from our location. The trail was mobbed. It is well laid out and for two fit lads was a good workout. Toilets along the way and areas to take photos / stop for lunch. Hike of a lifetime. I would imagine the trail is extremely dangerous in more severe weather as some sections have very loose rocks / muddy slopes which were thankfully dry for us."

GetYourGuide traveler

"Brilliant walk in pure sunshine. Shuttle bus appeared on time. All good"

Mary

"This walk is truly spectacular. The only issue was with the booking system, initially the site said there were no spaces available, then I went back in and it said there was. It's clear that it linked to different shuttle companies, and each time I went it the prices were different or available spaces. The web site is quiet confusing."

Jason

"When contacting the team always available and with positive and useful answers."

GetYourGuide traveler

"Brutal hike and not for the unfit, but worth every mile and sweat"

GetYourGuide traveler

"Expensive, but cancellation of crossing due to weather conditions, and the seasons, likely contribute to this. Drivers had good craic, and got us safely and efficiently to and from the start and end points. Excellent day hike."
