What a Tongariro Crossing shuttle costs

Tongariro Crossing shuttle prices: $37 to $42 for park-and-ride, $42 to $74 for a return from town, guided walks to $255. NZD vs USD, DOC fees, paying less.

Updated October 2026

A Tongariro Crossing shuttle costs $37 to $42 per person for a park-and-ride, where you leave your car at the Ketetahi end and ride to the start, and $42 to $74 for a return shuttle that collects you in town, depending on how far from the track you sleep. Guided walks with Adrift cost $198 for a half day and $255 for the full crossing. The lowest real price on this site, $37, is shared by Owhango Adventures’ Tongariro Alpine Crossing Shuttle – Park & Ride Ketetahi, rated 4.8 from 294 GetYourGuide reviews, and the park-and-ride option on Tongariro Expeditions’ listing.

The walk itself is free. The Crossing has no entry fee or track fee, and DOC’s track booking costs nothing. Every price here is in US dollars per person: what GetYourGuide charged two adults on a real bookable date, checked October 2026. Operators quote New Zealand dollars on their own websites, and the live price for your date is always on the booking page.

Prices by type of shuttle

The ten products on this site fall into three groups, and the group you need decides most of what you pay.

Park-and-ride, $37 to $42. You drive to the Ketetahi end, where the track finishes, leave the car, ride about 30 minutes to Mangatepopo and walk back to it. You pay for one ride. Owhango Adventures and Tongariro Expeditions’ park-and-ride option cost $37. Active Outdoor Adventures’ Tongariro Crossing one-way shuttles: private secure carpark costs $39, and Active Outdoor says the parking fee is included with its one-way booking. Ruapehu Scenic Shuttles’ Park at Ketetahi shuttle costs $42 and has the most reviews of the four, 652. Two of these listings showed a lower teaser price on the listing card ($34 for Active Outdoor, $36 for Ruapehu Scenic) than the price on a real date, so judge by the price for your day. Our park-and-ride page compares them in detail.

Return shuttles from town, $42 to $74. The shuttle collects you in the morning, drops you at Mangatepopo and picks you up at Ketetahi in the afternoon, so you pay for two rides and need no car. From National Park Village, Tongariro Crossing Shuttles costs $42 and Dempsey Buses $51. From Ohakune, Dempsey’s return costs $62. From Turangi, Backyard Tours costs $68, and from Taupō, Tongariro Expeditions’ Taupō pickup costs $74.

Guided walks, $198 to $255. Adrift Tongariro Guiding’s full crossing with a guide costs $255 and includes transport between its base in National Park Village and the track, plus $60 of clothing and footwear hire. Its half-day walk costs $198, goes as far as Soda Springs and does not complete the Crossing. Both cancel free up to 14 days ahead, against 24 hours for the shuttles.

What changes the price

Where you sleep. On the return shuttles, the price mostly follows distance from the track. DOC puts National Park Village 13.5 km from the Crossing, Turangi 36.7 km, Ohakune 48 km and Taupō 86.5 km. The village returns cost $42 and $51, Ohakune $62 and Taupō $74. Turangi breaks the pattern: at $68 it costs more than Ohakune though it is closer. That listing also needs a minimum of two people and includes a cold drink after the walk and optional walking poles.

One ride or two. A park-and-ride saves you the second ride, but less than you might expect. Tongariro Crossing Shuttles’ return from National Park Village costs $42, the same as Ruapehu Scenic’s park-and-ride and only $5 more than the cheapest one. If you are staying in the village, the return shuttle costs about the same and spares you the drive to Ketetahi at both ends of the day.

The pickup option on one listing. Tongariro Expeditions sells both shapes on a single listing: $37 for its park-and-ride and $74 for the Shuttle From Taupo option. Choose the option carefully at checkout, because the two are easy to confuse.

A guide. The full guided crossing costs $213 more than the $42 village shuttle. For that you get a guide on the track, transport from the base and the hire allowance.

What it means for a group. Two people pay $74 between them on the cheapest park-and-ride and $148 on the Taupō return; four people pay $148 and $296. On park-and-ride you also pay for your own driving to the Ketetahi end. A few reviewers felt the park-and-ride fare was steep for a ride of 20 to 30 minutes, and one called a return fare expensive for a shuttle, so it helps to know the alternatives before you book. Our without a shuttle guide covers them.

Tongariro Expeditions appears twice because its two options sit on one listing and share one rating. Backyard Tours’ rating rests on just 3 reviews, and its first bookable date this season is 9 November 2026. Each price is the per-person price for two adults on the earliest bookable date in October or November 2026; prices can move with the date, so the figure on your booking page is the one that counts.

Two listings are left out of the table. Ruapehu Scenic Shuttles’ new return shuttle from Waimarino showed no bookable price in October 2026. And Kiwi Road Tours’ private transfer from Auckland, at $340 per person, is transport to your accommodation near the park, not a Crossing shuttle, so you would still need one of the shuttles above. Our Auckland page covers that trip.

US dollars here, NZ dollars at the operator

GetYourGuide shows these shuttles in US dollars. The operators publish New Zealand dollars on their own websites, so the same seat can look more expensive there until you convert it. These are the direct fares the operators show, with the GetYourGuide price beside them:

Tongariro Expeditions also sells a Turangi return from NZ$120 on its own site, and Tongariro Crossing Shuttles a one-way ride from Ketetahi to Mangatepopo for $65, run by National Park Shuttles. Convert at your card’s rate on the day before you decide which is cheaper. The private car park at the Ketetahi end sells its own parking-and-shuttle package, and its price differs between its own pages, so check it when you book.

Is the Tongariro Crossing free to walk?

Yes. As of October 2026 there is no entry fee or track fee, and DOC says there is no cost to book. DOC’s free online booking is recommended for everyone, and required if you use a shuttle or a guide; it is not a permit and has no cap on numbers.

Part of your fare does reach DOC. Operators pay DOC a concession fee and a $3 per-visitor community contribution charge, which they may pass on to you. Some listings say park fees or DOC charges are included in the price. There is no park entry fee to pay, and $3 per visitor is the only per-person figure DOC publishes for operators.

A charge for international visitors has been proposed but is not law. The government announced in August 2025 that it planned an access charge at four sites, including the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, and RNZ reported a range of NZ$20 to NZ$40, with no final amount decided. New Zealand citizens and residents would not pay. The Conservation Amendment Bill passed its first reading on 12 May 2026 and still has further stages to clear, and DOC says it cannot begin charging until the bill becomes law. News reports put the earliest start in 2027, and no fee, collection method or start date has been confirmed.

How to pay less

  • Drive and park at the Ketetahi end. The $37 Owhango Adventures shuttle and Tongariro Expeditions’ park-and-ride option are the lowest prices on this site.
  • Sleep in National Park Village. The $42 roundtrip shuttle costs $32 less per person than the Taupō pickup, and for two people that is $64. Our National Park Village page covers both village shuttles.
  • Pick the right option. On Tongariro Expeditions’ listing, the park-and-ride costs half as much as the Taupō pickup.
  • Book a refundable seat. Every shuttle here can be cancelled free up to 24 hours before, and you can reserve now and pay later, so a bad forecast costs you nothing if you cancel in time.
  • Catch your return. Ruapehu Scenic Shuttles says that if you cannot complete the hike, alternative transport may be arranged at additional cost, and one reviewer of another operator missed the last afternoon run and walked partly along the highway to reach the car. Know your last return time before you start.
  • Book for the date you mean. The teaser price on a listing card can sit below the price on your date, so compare the figure at checkout.

What you get back when the weather turns

Any GetYourGuide shuttle booking here can be cancelled for a full refund up to 24 hours ahead; Adrift’s guided walks need 14 days. When an operator cancels for weather, each listing uses its own words. Ruapehu Scenic Shuttles and Active Outdoor Adventures offer a full refund or a transfer, Tongariro Expeditions a full refund or another day, and Owhango Adventures a full refund or an alternative departure where available. Adrift decides at its base at meeting time and, under its own terms, offers a refund less the booking fee or a new date within 12 months.

A few reviewers waited a long time for a refund after a weather cancellation, so keep your booking confirmation and follow up through GetYourGuide. In summer DOC issues a Not Recommended Today advisory at 6 am when strong wind or heavy rain is forecast at Red Crater, and shuttles generally do not run in winter. Our weather and best time guide explains how operators decide.
