Which Tongariro Crossing shuttle should you book?
All ten Tongariro Crossing shuttles and guided walks compared by pickup, type, price and reviews, with a pick for each kind of walker and season.
If you have no car and are sleeping in National Park Village, book the Tongariro Alpine Crossing: Hike Trail Roundtrip Shuttle with Tongariro Crossing Shuttles. It costs $42 per person and is rated 4.7 from 882 GetYourGuide reviews, the most-reviewed crossing shuttle on GetYourGuide. If you have a car, drive to the Ketetahi end and take a park-and-ride: the lowest price is $37, on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing Shuttle – Park & Ride Ketetahi with Owhango Adventures and on the park-and-ride option of the Tongariro Expeditions listing, and you finish the walk at your own car with no return run to catch.
Every price below is in US dollars per person on GetYourGuide for a bookable date, checked October 2026; operators quote NZ dollars on their own sites, so their figures look higher.

What decides your shuttle
Start with the car. The crossing is one way, from Mangatepopo to Ketetahi Road, and DOC says there is no parking for Crossing walkers at Mangatepopo in summer. With a car, you leave it at the Ketetahi end and ride to the start, which costs $37 to $42 and leaves nothing to catch at the finish. Without one, you need a return shuttle from the town you sleep in.
Next comes your base. Return shuttles on GetYourGuide start in National Park Village ($42 and $51), Ohakune ($62), Turangi ($68) and Taupō ($74). None of the listings here starts in Whakapapa Village. If you have not booked a bed yet, our guide to where to stay for the Tongariro Crossing compares the towns by distance and shuttles.
Then think about your pace. Most people take 7 to 8 hours in summer. On a return shuttle the operator’s afternoon runs set the end of your day: Tongariro Crossing Shuttles’ own site lists returns from 1:30 pm until 5:30 pm. Slow walkers want an early pickup and a late return; fast walkers can end up waiting at Ketetahi. A park-and-ride takes the clock away.
Last, the month. The main season runs from Labour Weekend to 30 April, and shuttles generally do not run in winter (see the winter pick below). One listing also starts late: Backyard Tours’ first bookable date this season is 9 November 2026.
Picks by traveler
No car, sleeping in National Park Village
Book the featured return shuttle with Tongariro Crossing Shuttles at $42 (our breakdown). Its own site lists village departures at 5:45, 7:15, 8:30 and 9:45 am. For $9 more, Dempsey Buses’ Round-Trip Shuttle Service collects you from one of seven named lodges and stops in the village, or from Erua, rated 4.8 from 71 reviews (our breakdown). Choose among its published return times and check which is the last. The National Park Village shuttle page covers both.
Staying in Taupō
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing with Shuttle Transfers listing from Tongariro Expeditions has a Shuttle From Taupo option at $74, rated 4.7 from 415 reviews (our breakdown). Its listing puts the drive at about an hour each way and the whole day at about 10 hours. With a car, driving to the Ketetahi end and taking a $37 park-and-ride costs half as much. See the Taupō shuttle page.
Based in Ohakune or Turangi
From Ohakune, Dempsey Buses’ return shuttle from Ohakune costs $62 and is rated 4.8 from 19 reviews (our breakdown); the Ohakune page has the details. From Turangi, Backyard Tours’ Mountain Shuttle Services lists 15 accommodation pickups for $68, but it has only 3 reviews at 3.9, needs at least two people and starts on 9 November 2026 (our breakdown). Turangi is 36.7 km from the crossing, so with a car a park-and-ride is the simpler plan.
Traveling with a car
Take a park-and-ride. The Ruapehu Scenic Shuttles park-and-ride has the most reviews of the four, 4.8 from 652, at $42 (our breakdown). The Owhango Adventures shuttle is $37 and rated 4.8 from 294 (our breakdown). The two are different operators that happen to publish the same listing text. Both offer free roadside parking near Ketetahi, which DOC advises against on state highways. If you would like the car off the road, the Active Outdoor Adventures shuttle uses its own private car park at the Ketetahi end, at $39 with departures at 6, 7, 8 and 9 am per its listing, rated 4.3 from 77 (our breakdown). The park-and-ride page compares all four.
Slower walkers
A park-and-ride suits you best, because your car waits at the finish however long you take. On a return shuttle, the featured listing suggests taking an early shuttle in the morning and a late one in the afternoon.
Fast walkers
One reviewer of the featured shuttle finished in under five hours and faced a two-hour wait at Ketetahi for the next run. If you walk fast, take a later morning pickup, or drive and take a park-and-ride so you can leave as soon as you reach the car.
First-timers who want a guide
Adrift’s Tongariro Alpine Crossing: Premium Guided Hike costs $255 for a 9-hour day from its base at 53 Carroll St, National Park Village, rated 4.6 from 231 reviews (our breakdown). Transfers from Taupō, Turangi and Whakapapa cost extra, with a minimum of two, and Adrift says reaching the Ketetahi end is not guaranteed.
Walking in winter
DOC treats May to late October as winter, calls alpine skills and equipment essential, and recommends a guide; its gear list includes a helmet, crampons, an ice axe, an avalanche transceiver, a probe and a shovel. Guided trips include transport, and the Adrift premium hike supplies crampons and ice axes when conditions call for them. The weather and best time guide explains the seasons.
Every option by type
These are the ten products we have pages for. Tongariro Expeditions sells two options on one listing, so it appears in both shuttle tables.
Return shuttles from town
| Shuttle | Operator | Boards at | Type | From | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tongariro Alpine Crossing: Hike Trail Roundtrip Shuttle | Tongariro Crossing Shuttles | Your accommodation, National Park Village | Return | $42 | 4.7 (882) |
| Tongariro Alpine Crossing: Round-Trip Shuttle Service | Dempsey Buses | 7 named stops, National Park Village, or Erua | Return | $51 | 4.8 (71) |

| Tongariro Alpine Crossing with Shuttle Transfers (Taupō option) | Tongariro Expeditions | Pickup in Taupō | Return | $74 | 4.7 (415) |
Each drops you at Mangatepopo and collects you at Ketetahi. A newer Ruapehu Scenic Shuttles return shuttle from Waimarino collects from accommodation in National Park, Raurimu or Owhango, but it has no reviews yet and had no bookable price in October 2026.
Park-and-ride from the Ketetahi end
| Shuttle | Operator | Boards at | Type | From | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tongariro Alpine Crossing Shuttle – Park & Ride Ketetahi | Owhango Adventures | Ketetahi Road, Otukou | One way | $37 | 4.8 (294) |
| Tongariro Alpine Crossing with Shuttle Transfers (Park & Ride option) | Tongariro Expeditions | Park & ride off SH46, Ketetahi end | One way | $37 | 4.7 (415) |

| Tongariro Alpine Crossing Shuttle : Park at Ketetahi | Ruapehu Scenic Shuttles | Ketetahi Road, Otukou | One way | $42 | 4.8 (652) |
The ride from Ketetahi to Mangatepopo takes about 30 minutes. Owhango Adventures asks you to arrive 10 to 15 minutes before departure. A private, monitored car park near Ketetahi is used by several operators and reopens for the season on 24 October 2026. Our Tongariro Crossing parking guide explains the options at each road end.
Guided walks
| Walk | Operator | Boards at | Type | From | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tongariro Alpine Half Day Guided Group Walk | Adrift Tongariro Guiding | 53 Carroll St, National Park Village | Guided half day to Soda Springs, 4 h | $198 | 4.8 (26) |
| Tongariro Alpine Crossing: Premium Guided Hike | Adrift Tongariro Guiding | 53 Carroll St, National Park Village | Guided full crossing, 9 h | $255 | 4.6 (231) |
The half-day walk goes only as far as Soda Springs, on the shared first stretch of the track, and does not complete the crossing (our breakdown). Both include transport from the Adrift base.
What reviewers complain about
Every shuttle here with more than a handful of reviews is rated between 4.3 and 4.8, and the low-star reviews repeat a few themes. On the return shuttles, the main one is waiting: a few reviewers of the featured shuttle sat at Ketetahi for a long time for the next run, one found the bus in poor condition, and one said the early bus never came. On the Tongariro Expeditions listing, one reviewer found the meeting point unclear, and one group missed the last shuttle and walked to the car park partly along the highway.
On the park-and-ride listings, two reviewers, one on the Ruapehu Scenic listing and one on Active Outdoor’s, struggled to get a refund after a weather cancellation, and one found the Active Outdoor car park staff unhelpful. One Owhango Adventures reviewer thought the fare high for a 30-minute ride. The two Dempsey Buses listings show no low-star reviews. If a weather cancellation leaves you waiting for money, ask for the refund in writing straight away, and contact GetYourGuide if the operator does not reply.
Know before you book
Make the DOC booking. It is free, recommended for everyone, and required for shuttle and guided-walk customers, because operators may carry only walkers who hold one. Some listings call it a government requirement; DOC’s own wording is that it is free and voluntary, with no cap and no penalty for arriving without one. Keep the receipt to show rangers at the car park.
Know the cancellation rules. Every shuttle here cancels free up to 24 hours ahead on GetYourGuide, and Adrift’s guided walks up to 14 days ahead. When an operator cancels for weather, Ruapehu Scenic Shuttles, Tongariro Expeditions and Active Outdoor Adventures offer a full refund or a transfer, and Owhango Adventures a full refund or another departure where one is available. Ruapehu Scenic Shuttles sends its final confirmation the evening before.
Keep a spare day. Shuttle operators must follow DOC’s weather alerts, and DOC counted 70 hazardous-weather days in the 2025/26 summer. Check GeoNet’s volcanic alert level too.
Check the age rules. DOC does not recommend the crossing for children under 10, and each listing sets its own minimum, so read yours before you book.
Frequently asked questions
Are shuttles banned on the Tongariro Crossing?
No. DOC calls shuttles the best way to get to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. Operators need a DOC concession, must carry only walkers with a DOC booking and must follow weather alerts, and shuttles generally do not run in winter. After the November 2025 fires, DOC restricted Mangatepopo Road to shuttle drop-offs and pickups.
Which Tongariro Crossing shuttle is cheapest?
Two park-and-ride seats tie at $37 per person: the Owhango Adventures one-way shuttle and the park-and-ride option on the Tongariro Expeditions listing. The cheapest return shuttle is the featured one from National Park Village at $42.
