How Park-and-Ride at Ketetahi Works

Four steps from booking to the walk back to your car, as Ruapehu Scenic Shuttles' listing describes them.

  1. Book the shuttle and DOC

Reserve on GetYourGuide from $42 per person, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Complete DOC's free Tongariro Alpine Crossing booking too; the listing says the link comes in your confirmation email. Final confirmation is sent the evening before, based on the weather.

  2. Drive to Ketetahi Road

Drive to the meeting point on Ketetahi Road, at the finish of the track (plus code WMM8+PP, Otukou), and arrive 10 to 15 minutes before your departure. Park where your confirmation tells you to; DOC advises against parking on the state highway verge.

  3. Ride to Mangatepopo

The shuttle takes about 30 minutes to the start of the Crossing at Mangatepopo. The listing includes a pre-departure safety briefing and current weather and track updates from the driver, so ask your questions on the way.

  4. Walk back to your car

Walk the Crossing from Mangatepopo to Ketetahi at your own pace and finish at your car, with no return shuttle to catch. If you cannot complete the hike, the listing says alternative transport may be arranged at extra cost.

Park & Ride Guide

Tongariro Crossing Park and Ride: How It Works

Why the car waits at the finish, which car park each shuttle uses, departure times and what happens on a weather day.

Park-and-ride means you drive to the Ketetahi end of the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, leave your car there, take a shuttle of about 30 minutes to the start at Mangatepopo and walk back to the car. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing Shuttle: Park at Ketetahi with Ruapehu Scenic Shuttles has the most reviews of the park-and-ride listings here, 4.8 from 652 GetYourGuide reviews, and costs from $42 per person. Three other listings sell the same one-way ride for $37 to $39.

The track is about 19.4 km one way (DOC; operators round it to 20 km), with about 800 m of climbing and 1,100 m of descent, and most people take 7 to 8 hours in summer. It is an alpine walk, and the weather can turn quickly, so the shuttle runs only when the operator judges conditions safe. Prices on this page are US dollars per person on GetYourGuide for a real date, checked October 2026.

Quick picks

Why the car waits at the finish

You cannot leave a car at the start for a full crossing. In the summer season DOC does not provide parking at Mangatepopo for people doing the full Crossing, and local sources describe a four-hour limit there; either way, you cannot leave a car there for the 7 to 8 hours the walk takes. The track also runs one way. DOC’s rules for shuttle operators say walkers are dropped at Mangatepopo and finish at Ketetahi, and that direction starts higher, at 1,120 m against 760 m at the Ketetahi road end.

So the car goes to the finish, and the shuttle does its work in the morning, when the times are fixed. In the afternoon you have no schedule. You walk at your own pace, stop where you like, and drive away when you reach the car.

That is the main difference from a return shuttle. A return shuttle collects you at Ketetahi at set times: Tongariro Crossing Shuttles, for example, publishes returns from 1:30 pm until 5:30 pm. Two reviewers of that return service wrote about long waits at Ketetahi, one of them facing two hours after finishing early. With park-and-ride, that wait disappears.

There is a cost on the other side. You need a car to reach Ketetahi, and the drive back to your bed comes after a long day on your feet. If you are staying in National Park Village or Taupō without a car, a return shuttle from town is the simpler plan.

Which car park each shuttle uses

The four options board in three places, so read your confirmation before you set off.

Ruapehu Scenic Shuttles and Owhango Adventures both use the Ketetahi Road pickup point at the finish of the track (plus code WMM8+PP, Otukou). Both ask you to arrive 10 to 15 minutes before departure. These two are separate operators, even though their listings use the same wording. Both offer free all-day parking, which in practice means roadside parking near Ketetahi. DOC advises against parking on state highways for safety reasons, and the private car park described below is the alternative. One reviewer noticed other walkers had parked in the wrong place, so follow the parking directions you are sent.

Active Outdoor Adventures boards at the private, monitored car park near Ketetahi, on State Highway 46 opposite the Ketetahi track end. It is about 900 m, or 10 minutes’ walk, from where the track comes out. The car park is video monitored, staffed until 5 pm and closes at 7 pm, and several shuttle operators use it. Active Outdoor says the parking fee is included with its one-way booking. The car park closes for winter and reopens on 24 October 2026.

Tongariro Expeditions’ listing places its Park & Ride off SH46 near the end of the Crossing (plus code WMP5+3F, Otukou) and warns that there are other car parks nearby. It also mentions an afternoon shuttle between 1 and 5 pm to bring you back to the car park. One reviewer found the meeting point hard to locate, and another missed the last afternoon run and walked back to the car, partly along the highway. If you choose this option, check the exact location and the last run before you start walking.

Departure times and how early to start

Active Outdoor’s listing gives departures at 6, 7, 8 and 9 am and says times may vary with demand. The other three listings show their starting times when you check availability. Whatever you book, confirm the time on your voucher, because timetables change.

An early seat gives you more margin. With 7 to 8 hours of walking, a 9 am departure brings you back to Ketetahi at around 5 pm, two hours before the private car park closes at 7 pm. On a slower day, or with long stops at the Emerald Lakes, the earlier departures leave more daylight in hand. The toilets at Mangatepopo can have a queue when a shuttle arrives; DOC says the next ones are about 1 km, or 20 minutes, up the track.

On a weather day

Each listing has its own wording. Ruapehu Scenic sends a final confirmation the evening before and offers a full refund or a transfer if it cancels for unsafe weather. Owhango Adventures offers a full refund or an alternative departure, and may move you to the nearest shuttle or another local operator if too few people book. Active Outdoor and Tongariro Expeditions both offer a full refund or a move to another day. Every GetYourGuide booking here can also be cancelled for a full refund up to 24 hours before.

In summer DOC issues a daily “Not Recommended Today” advisory at 6 am, based on the Red Crater forecast for 9 am to 5 pm. It is triggered by average winds of 55 km/h or more, gusts of 70 km/h or more, or heavy rain. Two reviewers waited a long time for a refund after a weather cancellation, so keep your confirmation and follow up through GetYourGuide. Keep a spare day in your plans, and see our weather and best time guide for the seasons.

Before you book

  • Make DOC’s free online booking. It is recommended for everyone and required if you use a shuttle or guide, and you may be asked to show it to rangers at the car park.
  • Check the season. The summer shuttle season runs from Labour Weekend to 30 April, and DOC says shuttles generally do not run in winter.
  • DOC does not recommend the Crossing for children under 10, and Ruapehu Scenic’s listing excludes them.
  • Carry 2 to 3 liters of water. DOC says the water along the track is not suitable for drinking.

For every place you can and cannot leave a car, read our Tongariro Crossing parking guide. To weigh park-and-ride against a drop-off or an out-and-back walk, see the Crossing without a shuttle.

Pick your car park and departure, then check availability for the Ketetahi park-and-ride.
