"We got lucky with the weather, overpacking gear in anticipation of the rain. The shuttle arrived in a timely manner and dropped us to and from our location. The trail was mobbed. It is well laid out and for two fit lads was a good workout. Toilets along the way and areas to take photos / stop for lunch. Hike of a lifetime. I would imagine the trail is extremely dangerous in more severe weather as some sections have very loose rocks / muddy slopes which were thankfully dry for us."

How the Return Shuttle Works
Four steps from booking to the ride home, as Tongariro Crossing Shuttles' listing describes them.
Book and make your DOC booking
Reserve on GetYourGuide from $42 per person and pay later if you like, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Then make the free DOC track booking, which shuttle passengers need. Keep the receipt on your phone.
Get picked up in the village
The shuttle collects you from your accommodation in National Park Village, also called Waimarino, in the morning. The listing suggests an early shuttle if you want to walk at a slower pace. Confirm your pickup time on the voucher.
Walk Mangatepopo to Ketetahi
You are dropped at Mangatepopo and walk about 19.4 km by DOC's measure, over Red Crater and past the Emerald Lakes, down to the Ketetahi end. Allow 7 to 8 hours in summer. Bring food, water, sunscreen and rain gear.
Ride back from Ketetahi
Afternoon shuttles collect walkers at the Ketetahi end and take them back to the village. The listing suggests a late return if you walk slowly. Know the last return time before you set off, and allow for a wait if you finish fast.

Tongariro Crossing Shuttles from National Park Village
The two return shuttles, departure and pickup times, Whakapapa, the guided walks and what to buy the day before.
From National Park Village, book Tongariro Crossing Shuttles’ Tongariro Alpine Crossing: Hike Trail Roundtrip Shuttle. It collects you from your accommodation in the village in the morning, drops you at Mangatepopo, the start of the track, and brings you back from the Ketetahi end in the afternoon, for $42 per person. With 882 GetYourGuide reviews and a 4.7 rating, it is the most-reviewed Crossing shuttle on GetYourGuide.
The village, also called Waimarino, is the closest of the shuttle towns to the track. DOC puts it 13.5 km from the Crossing, so the morning ride takes only about 15 to 20 minutes. Whakapapa Village is closer still, at 10.4 km, but none of the shuttles on this site start there; the Whakapapa section below covers your options.
Quick picks
- Most reviews and the earliest start: the $42 roundtrip shuttle from Tongariro Crossing Shuttles.
- Pickup at a named lodge: Dempsey Buses’ Tongariro Alpine Crossing: Round-Trip Shuttle Service, $51, with seven pickup points in the village and a second option from Erua. Rated 4.8 from 71 reviews.
- You have a car: drive to the Ketetahi end and take Ruapehu Scenic Shuttles’ Tongariro Alpine Crossing Shuttle : Park at Ketetahi, $42, so the car is waiting when you finish.
- You want a guide: Adrift Tongariro Guiding’s Tongariro Alpine Crossing: Premium Guided Hike, $255, starts at its base on Carroll Street in the village.
The two return shuttles from the village
Tongariro Crossing Shuttles’ listing describes a morning pickup from National Park Village and afternoon return shuttles from Ketetahi, and advises slower walkers to take an early shuttle in the morning and a late one in the afternoon. The operator’s own website lists Crossing departures from the village at 5:45, 7:15, 8:30 and 9:45 am, with returns from Ketetahi from 1:30 pm until 5:30 pm. Timetables change, so treat these as a guide and confirm the time on your voucher. The listing does not recommend the shuttle for children under 7; DOC does not recommend the Crossing itself for children under 10.
The 882 reviews are mostly happy, and the low-star ones cluster around waiting. One fast walker finished in under 5 hours and faced a two-hour wait for a return run, another felt there were not enough shuttles, and one found the bus in poor condition. A couple of reviewers reported problems with communication and a missed early pickup, so keep the operator’s number with your voucher.
Dempsey Buses’ return shuttle costs $51 and names its seven pickup points in the village: The Crossing Lodge and Backpackers, National Park Alpine Lodge, Mountain Heights Lodge, Park n Ride to Tongariro National Park, Schnapps Bar, The Park Hotel Ruapehu and Tongariro Crossing Lodge. It drops you back at the same places. A second option, at the same price, collects from Erua. The listing includes a safety briefing and a choice of return times; check which is the last one. It is rated 4.8 from 71 reviews, with no low-star themes.
Choose Tongariro Crossing Shuttles if you want the 5:45 am start or the most reviewed operator, and Dempsey if your lodge is on its pickup list and a $9 difference matters less than being collected at the door. Ruapehu Scenic Shuttles also lists a Return Shuttle from Waimarino from accommodation in National Park, Raurimu or Owhango; it is new, with no reviews yet.
Picking a departure time
The walk is about 19.4 km one way by DOC’s measure and takes 7 to 8 hours in summer. Work backward from the last return. On Tongariro Crossing Shuttles’ published times, a 5:45 am start with an 8-hour walk brings you to Ketetahi around 2 pm, well inside the 1:30 to 5:30 pm return window. A 9:45 am start with the same walk lands you close to 6 pm, after the last listed return. If you are unsure of your pace, take one of the first two departures. If you are fast, expect to wait at Ketetahi for a while, as some reviewers did. Our what to bring guide covers start times and how long the walk takes.
Staying in Whakapapa
Whakapapa Village, 10.4 km from the Crossing by DOC’s figures, is home to the Tongariro National Park Visitor Centre on State Highway 48. None of the GetYourGuide shuttles on this site start there. You have three ways around that. Active Outdoor Adventures lists return trips from Whakapapa Holiday Park and Skotel on its own website. Adrift adds transfers from Whakapapa Village to its guided walks at a surcharge, for at least two people. Or, if you have a car, drive to the Ketetahi end and use a park-and-ride shuttle. You cannot leave a car at Mangatepopo for a full crossing: in summer DOC does not provide parking there for people doing the whole track.
Guided walks from 53 Carroll Street
Adrift Tongariro Guiding is based at 53 Carroll Street in the village. Its full guided crossing, the Premium Guided Hike, takes about 9 hours and costs $255, rated 4.6 from 231 reviews; in summer Adrift meets at 8 am and returns at 5:30 pm. Its Tongariro Alpine Half Day Guided Group Walk, $198 for 4 hours with at most 10 people, walks to Soda Springs and back and does not complete the Crossing. Both cancel free up to 14 days ahead, against 24 hours for the shuttles.
The day before your pickup
Buy food the day before. Adrift notes that National Park Village is small and has no cafes or supermarkets open early in the morning. Carry 2 to 3 liters of water, because DOC says water along the track is not suitable for drinking, and pack toilet paper, since the track toilets have none.
Make your free DOC track booking: DOC recommends it for everyone and requires it if you use a shuttle or a guide. Check DOC’s Not Recommended Today advisory, issued at 6 am in summer from the Red Crater forecast, and keep a spare day in your plans. Our weather and best time guide explains how operators decide.

What Riders from the Village Say
Ratings and review counts are the operators' live figures on GetYourGuide and may shift slightly day to day.
"Brilliant walk in pure sunshine. Shuttle bus appeared on time. All good"
"This walk is truly spectacular. The only issue was with the booking system, initially the site said there were no spaces available, then I went back in and it said there was. It's clear that it linked to different shuttle companies, and each time I went it the prices were different or available spaces. The web site is quiet confusing."
"When contacting the team always available and with positive and useful answers."
"Brutal hike and not for the unfit, but worth every mile and sweat"
"Expensive, but cancellation of crossing due to weather conditions, and the seasons, likely contribute to this. Drivers had good craic, and got us safely and efficiently to and from the start and end points. Excellent day hike."

Shuttles from National Park Village: Common Questions
Departure and pickup times, pickup points, Whakapapa, guided walks from the village, children, DOC bookings and weather days.
Yes, two return shuttles on GetYourGuide. Tongariro Crossing Shuttles costs $42 per person and is rated 4.7 from 882 reviews; Dempsey Buses costs $51 and is rated 4.8 from 71. Both collect you in the village in the morning, drop you at Mangatepopo and bring you back from the Ketetahi end in the afternoon. The village is 13.5 km from the Crossing by DOC's figures.
Tongariro Crossing Shuttles' own website lists Crossing departures from the village at 5:45, 7:15, 8:30 and 9:45 am, and returns from Ketetahi from 1:30 pm until 5:30 pm. Timetables change, and the GetYourGuide listing asks you to check starting times for your date, so confirm the time on your voucher. If you walk slowly, take an early departure.
No single time applies to every operator. Tongariro Crossing Shuttles' website gives returns from 1:30 pm until 5:30 pm, and Dempsey Buses offers a choice of return times on its listing. Check the last return on your voucher before you start walking. The walk takes 7 to 8 hours in summer, so a late start leaves little margin before the last run.
Dempsey Buses names seven pickup points: The Crossing Lodge and Backpackers, National Park Alpine Lodge, Mountain Heights Lodge, Park n Ride to Tongariro National Park, Schnapps Bar, The Park Hotel Ruapehu and Tongariro Crossing Lodge. It drops you back at the same places. A second option, at the same $51 price, collects from Erua. See our Dempsey shuttle breakdown.
None of the GetYourGuide shuttles on this site start in Whakapapa Village, which is 10.4 km from the Crossing by DOC's figures. Active Outdoor Adventures lists return trips from Whakapapa Holiday Park and Skotel on its own website, and Adrift adds Whakapapa transfers to its guided walks at a surcharge. With a car, you can drive to the Ketetahi end and use park-and-ride instead.
You wait at the Ketetahi end for the next return run. One reviewer of the Tongariro Crossing Shuttles service finished in under 5 hours and faced a two-hour wait, and another felt there were not enough return shuttles. If you walk fast and hate waiting, a park-and-ride from the Ketetahi end puts you back at your own car. See our park-and-ride page.
The listings set their own limits: Tongariro Crossing Shuttles is not recommended for children under 7, and Dempsey Buses excludes children under 6. DOC does not recommend the Crossing itself for children under 10, since it is a long alpine walk with about 800 m of climbing and 1,100 m of descent. With younger children, consider the Soda Springs walk, a 2-hour return from Mangatepopo.
Yes. Adrift Tongariro Guiding is based at 53 Carroll Street in the village. Its Premium Guided Hike takes about 9 hours and costs $255 per person, and its half-day walk to Soda Springs costs $198 for 4 hours but does not complete the Crossing. Both cancel free up to 14 days ahead. See our guided hike breakdown.
Plan not to. Adrift notes that National Park Village is small and has no cafes or supermarkets open early in the morning, so buy lunch and snacks the day before. Carry 2 to 3 liters of water, because DOC says the water along the track is not suitable for drinking, and bring toilet paper for the track toilets. Our what to bring guide has the full list.
Yes. DOC's free online booking is recommended for everyone and required if you use a shuttle or a guide. It costs nothing, has no cap and is not a permit. Make it before your shuttle day and keep the receipt on your phone or on paper, because rangers at the car park can ask to see it. There is no entry fee for the Crossing.
You can cancel any GetYourGuide shuttle booking free up to 24 hours before. The two village listings do not spell out a weather policy, so ask the operator what you get back if it cancels. In summer DOC checks the Red Crater forecast at 6 am and issues a Not Recommended Today advisory when it expects strong wind or heavy rain. Keep a spare day in the village. See our weather guide.
You can leave your car at your accommodation and take a return shuttle, which is how the village shuttles work. What you cannot do is leave a car at Mangatepopo for a full crossing: in summer DOC does not provide parking there for people doing the whole track. If you would rather finish at your own car, drive to the Ketetahi end and take a park-and-ride shuttle to the start.
