Ohakune Guide
The Tongariro Crossing from Ohakune
How the return shuttle works, the early start, Ohakune against National Park Village, and driving to Ketetahi yourself.
To get from Ohakune to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing without driving, book Dempsey Buses’ Tongariro Alpine Crossing: Return shuttle from Ohakune. It picks you up in Ohakune in the morning, drops you at Mangatepopo, where the track starts, and collects you from the Ketetahi end in the afternoon. It costs $62 per person on GetYourGuide (US dollars, checked October 2026), with free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and is rated 4.8 from 19 reviews. That is a small sample, so read the listing itself before you book.
The Crossing runs one way, about 19.4 km on DOC’s figure (operators round it to 20 km), from Mangatepopo to Ketetahi Road, which is why you need transport at both ends. Ohakune is 48 km from the Crossing on DOC’s list of road distances, against 13.5 km from National Park Village, so you ride for longer and start earlier than walkers staying in the village.
Quick picks
- Staying in Ohakune with no car: the $62 Dempsey return shuttle above, with pickup in town and a ride back after the walk (our breakdown).
- Able to spend the night before in National Park Village: Tongariro Crossing Shuttles’ roundtrip shuttle costs $42 and is rated 4.7 from 882 reviews, the most-reviewed crossing shuttle on GetYourGuide (our breakdown).
- Staying at one of the village lodges: Dempsey’s round-trip shuttle from National Park Village, $51 and rated 4.8 from 71 reviews, collects from seven named pickup points.
- Driving your own car: park at the Ketetahi end and take a one-way shuttle to the start, such as Ruapehu Scenic Shuttles’ Park at Ketetahi shuttle, $42 and rated 4.8 from 652 reviews. Our park-and-ride page compares the options.
How the Ohakune return shuttle works
The listing describes a round trip with a morning pickup and an afternoon return. Pickup is included; the exact point and time appear when you check availability, and the time on your voucher is the one to follow. The van takes you to the Mangatepopo road end, at 1,120 m. You walk north over Red Crater, the highest point at 1,886 m, and down to Ketetahi Road at 760 m, which adds up to about 800 m of climbing and 1,100 m of descent. Plan on 7 to 8 hours in summer.
Dempsey includes a safety briefing, and the listing mentions more than one return time from Ketetahi. Pick from the published return times when you book, and ask which is the last run of the day. If you walk fast, you may wait at Ketetahi for the next van. If you walk slowly, the last run is your deadline. Reviewers of other Crossing shuttles describe both: a few waited a long time at Ketetahi for their ride back, and one walker who missed the last shuttle walked back to the car park, partly along the highway.
Food is not included. The listing asks you to bring a sun hat, food, a packed lunch, sunscreen, water, rain gear and clothing for the weather. DOC says the water along the track is not suitable for drinking and advises carrying 2 to 3 liters, so fill your bottles in Ohakune. Our what to bring guide has the full list.
DOC rates the fitness needed as high, describes the track as steep and undulating, and does not recommend it for children under 10.
The drive from Ohakune and your start time
At 48 km, the run from Ohakune to Mangatepopo takes roughly 45 to 55 minutes, against 15 to 20 minutes from National Park Village. The listing does not print a pickup time, but the distance means an early start. For comparison, Tongariro Crossing Shuttles publishes departures from National Park Village at 5:45, 7:15, 8:30 and 9:45 am on its own website, with returns from Ketetahi from 1:30 pm until 5:30 pm.
An early pickup gives you slack at the end of the day, when the return vans run. If your pickup is later, you have less time to finish before the last one. Confirm both times with Dempsey before you go, because timetables change through the season.
Ohakune or National Park Village
Both towns work. The difference is distance, price and the number of shuttles to choose from. National Park Village sits 13.5 km from the Crossing and has two return shuttles on GetYourGuide, at $42 and $51. Ohakune is 48 km out and has one, at $62. Adrift, which is based in National Park Village, notes that the village is small and has no cafes or supermarkets open early in the morning, so buy your lunch the day before wherever you stay.
If Ohakune is where you already have a bed, the Dempsey shuttle solves the transport. If you have not booked a room yet and the Crossing is the reason for the trip, our where to stay guide compares the towns, and the National Park Village shuttle page covers the shuttles that start there. DOC also lists the Ohakune i-SITE (0800 647 483) as a place to book local shuttles.
Driving from Ohakune and parking at Ketetahi
With a car, you can skip the return shuttle. In the summer season DOC does not provide parking at Mangatepopo for people doing the full Crossing, and local sources describe a four-hour limit there; either way, you cannot leave a car at Mangatepopo for a full crossing. You drive to the Ketetahi end on State Highway 46 instead, leave the car, ride about 30 minutes to Mangatepopo and walk back to it.
Two kinds of parking are used at Ketetahi. A private, monitored car park near the track end serves several shuttle operators; it closes at 7 pm and re-opens on 24 October 2026 after winter. Ruapehu Scenic Shuttles and Owhango Adventures offer free roadside parking near Ketetahi, but DOC advises against parking on state highways for safety reasons. Ketetahi is on the north side of the park, off SH46, so check the drive on a map and leave early. Our parking guide covers the rules at each road end.
DOC booking, weather and a spare day
Book DOC’s free online track booking as well as your shuttle. DOC recommends it for everyone and requires it for anyone using a shuttle or guided walk. There is no fee to walk the Crossing.
The operator decides on the day whether the shuttle runs. From Labour Weekend to 30 April, DOC assesses the Red Crater forecast at 6 am and issues a “Not Recommended Today” advisory when wind or rain crosses its limits, and DOC’s concession conditions require shuttle operators to follow hazardous weather alerts. Your GetYourGuide booking has free cancellation up to 24 hours before; ask Dempsey how it handles a weather cancellation on the day. Keep a spare day in Ohakune if you can, and check DOC’s advisory before you set off. Our weather and best time guide explains how the call is made.

Ohakune Shuttle: Common Questions
Pickup, distance, return times, parking, DOC booking and weather days for walkers starting the Tongariro Crossing from Ohakune.
Yes. Dempsey Buses runs a return shuttle from Ohakune, sold on GetYourGuide at $62 per person (US dollars, checked October 2026) and rated 4.8 from 19 reviews. It picks you up in Ohakune in the morning, drops you at Mangatepopo, where the track starts, and collects you from the Ketetahi end in the afternoon. Free cancellation applies up to 24 hours before.
DOC lists Ohakune as 48 km by road from the Crossing, against 13.5 km for National Park Village and 36.7 km for Turangi. That works out to roughly 45 to 55 minutes in the van each way, so pickups from Ohakune start earlier than pickups from the village. Allow for the ride home in the afternoon when you plan dinner.
The GetYourGuide listing does not print a pickup time. The pickup point and time appear when you check availability, and the time on your voucher is the one to follow. Expect an early start, because Ohakune is 48 km from the Crossing and the walk takes 7 to 8 hours in summer. Confirm the time with Dempsey the day before, as timetables change through the season.
Dempsey's listing mentions more than one afternoon return time from Ketetahi but does not print them. Pick from the published return times when you book and ask which is the last run of the day. Fast walkers may wait at Ketetahi for the next van, and slow walkers need to reach the end before the last one. On other Crossing shuttles, a few reviewers waited a long time for their ride back.
The Dempsey return shuttle from Ohakune is $62 per person on GetYourGuide, in US dollars, checked October 2026. The two return shuttles from National Park Village are $42 and $51, and park-and-ride shuttles from the Ketetahi end start at $37. See our shuttle price guide for every option side by side.
No. In the summer season DOC does not provide parking at Mangatepopo for people doing the full Crossing, and local sources describe a four-hour limit there, so you cannot leave a car there for the day. Drive to the Ketetahi end on SH46 instead, park, and take a one-way shuttle of about 30 minutes to Mangatepopo. Our park-and-ride page compares the shuttles.
A private, monitored car park near the Ketetahi track end is used by several shuttle operators. It closes at 7 pm and re-opens on 24 October 2026 after winter. Some operators offer free roadside parking near Ketetahi, but DOC advises against parking on state highways for safety reasons. Our parking guide covers both road ends.
Yes. DOC's online track booking is free and recommended for everyone walking any part of the track, and DOC requires it for anyone using a shuttle or guided walk, so the operator will expect you to have one. It is not a permit and has no cap. There is no fee to walk the Crossing. Keep a digital or paper copy of the receipt to show rangers at the car park.
The operator decides on the day. From Labour Weekend to 30 April, DOC checks the Red Crater forecast at 6 am and issues a Not Recommended Today advisory when wind or rain crosses its limits, and shuttle operators follow DOC's hazardous weather alerts. The GetYourGuide booking has free cancellation up to 24 hours before. See our weather guide.
National Park Village is 13.5 km from the Crossing and has two return shuttles on GetYourGuide, at $42 and $51. Ohakune is 48 km away and has one, at $62, with an earlier start. Adrift notes that National Park Village has no cafes or supermarkets open early in the morning, so buy lunch the day before. Compare the towns in our where to stay guide.
DOC does not recommend the Crossing for children under 10, rates the fitness needed as high and describes the track as steep and undulating. Each shuttle listing also sets its own suitability rules, so read the listing before you book a child a seat. For a shorter outing, DOC notes that the first 5.4 km of the Crossing are shared with the Soda Springs Walk, a 2-hour return from Mangatepopo.
