How the Day from Taupō Works

Four steps from booking to the drive home, as Tongariro Expeditions' listing describes them.

  1. Choose the Taupō option

The listing has two options. Pick Shuttle From Taupo ($74 per person); the $37 option is a park-and-ride from the Ketetahi end. Pickup choices show when you check availability, and you can cancel free up to 24 hours before. Make your free DOC track booking too.

  2. Leave Taupō at first light

The listing describes an early start and a drive of about an hour to Mangatepopo, the start of the track. Your driver hands out a map and an information sheet and gives you the day's weather information before you set off.

  3. Walk Mangatepopo to Ketetahi

The track runs about 19.4 km one way by DOC's measure, over Red Crater at 1,886 m, past the Emerald Lakes and down to Ketetahi Road. Allow 7 to 8 hours in summer. Food and drink are not included, so carry your own.

  4. Ride back to Taupō

You finish at the Ketetahi end and ride back to Taupō, about another hour. The operator puts the whole day at about 10 hours. Check the time of the last return run on your voucher before you start walking.

Taupō Shuttle Guide

The Tongariro Crossing from Taupō and Turangi

How the day runs, the Turangi pickups, driving yourself to the Ketetahi end, and what to sort out before you book.

To get from Taupō to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing without driving, book the Shuttle From Taupo option on Tongariro Expeditions’ Tongariro Alpine Crossing with Shuttle Transfers. It costs $74 per person on GetYourGuide, drops you at the start of the track at Mangatepopo early in the morning, and brings you back to Taupō after you finish at the Ketetahi end. The listing is rated 4.7 from 415 GetYourGuide reviews, a score it shares with its cheaper park-and-ride option.

Taupō is a long way from the track. DOC puts it 86.5 km from the Crossing, and Tongariro Expeditions allows about an hour’s drive each way, so the operator puts your whole day at about 10 hours. The walk itself is about 19.4 km one way by DOC’s measure (operators round it to 20 km) and takes 7 to 8 hours in summer.

Quick picks

How the Taupō shuttle day runs

The listing describes a start at first light and a drive of about an hour to Mangatepopo. Before you set off, the driver hands out a map and an information sheet and gives you the weather information for the day. Both are listed as included, along with the pickup and drop-off. Food and drink are not, so buy lunch and snacks in Taupō the evening before and fill 2 to 3 liters of water. DOC says the water along the track is not suitable for drinking.

From Mangatepopo at 1,120 m you climb to Red Crater, the highest point at 1,886 m, pass the Emerald Lakes and Blue Lake, and descend to Ketetahi Road at 760 m. That is about 800 m of climbing and 1,100 m of descent. Toilets come every 1 to 2 hours along the track, and they have no toilet paper, so bring your own.

You finish at the Ketetahi end and ride about an hour back to Taupō. The listing does not print a pickup time or the last return run, so read both on your voucher and ask the driver in the morning when the last ride leaves Ketetahi. A few reviewers had trouble at the edges of the day: one found the meeting point was not where the instructions said, and one group missed the last afternoon run and had to walk to the car park, partly along the highway. Walkers who expect to be slow should know their return time before they reach Red Crater.

Turangi pickups with Backyard Tours

Turangi sits closer to the track than Taupō: DOC lists it 36.7 km from the Crossing. Backyard Tours, a Māori-owned business based in Turangi, sells a return shuttle on GetYourGuide for $68 per person. The listing names 15 pickup points around town, including Turangi Leisure Lodge, Creel Lodge, Tongariro River Motel and Riverstone Backpackers, and gives about an hour’s ride to the Mangatepopo car park, with a safety briefing on the way. The return trip includes a cold drink after the walk and the optional use of walking poles.

Three things to know before you book it. Its first date on GetYourGuide this season is 9 November 2026, so it does not cover the last days of October. Bookings need a minimum of two people, and if the operator cannot run your time because of seats or numbers, you get a full refund. And it has just 3 reviews with a 3.9 rating, which tells you little either way. Food, water and toilet paper are excluded. Our Turangi shuttle breakdown has the full details.

Active Outdoor Adventures is also based in Turangi and lists return trips from Turangi on its own website; its GetYourGuide listing is a park-and-ride from the Ketetahi end.

Driving from Taupō to the Ketetahi end

If you have a car, park-and-ride is the other way to do the day. You cannot leave a car at Mangatepopo for a full crossing: in summer DOC does not provide parking there for people doing the whole track, and local sources describe a four-hour limit. So you drive to the Ketetahi end off State Highway 46, leave the car, ride about 30 minutes to Mangatepopo and walk back to it. You never wait for a return shuttle, though you do drive home after 7 or 8 hours on your feet.

Four shuttles on this site do this run. Owhango Adventures and Tongariro Expeditions’ park-and-ride option cost $37, Active Outdoor Adventures’ one-way shuttle with a private secure car park $39 with departures at 6, 7, 8 and 9 am per its listing, and Ruapehu Scenic Shuttles’ Park at Ketetahi shuttle $42, rated 4.8 from 652 reviews. Some operators use roadside parking near Ketetahi, which DOC advises against on state highways; a private, monitored car park near the Ketetahi end is the alternative, and it reopens for the season on 24 October 2026. Our park-and-ride page compares the four, and the parking guide covers where you can and cannot leave a car.

Before you book from Taupō

Make your free DOC track booking. DOC recommends it for everyone and requires it if you travel with a shuttle or a guide; keep the receipt on your phone or on paper, because rangers at the car park can ask to see it.

Plan for weather. In summer DOC checks the Red Crater forecast at 6 am each day and issues a Not Recommended Today advisory when it expects average winds of 55 km/h or more, gusts of 70 km/h or more, or heavy rain. Tongariro Expeditions’ listing says it may cancel for bad weather, and you can then choose a full refund or move to another day. Any GetYourGuide booking here can be cancelled free up to 24 hours ahead. Keep a spare day in Taupō, and check DOC’s advisory the morning before. Shuttles generally do not run in winter, from May to late October. Our weather and best time guide has the details.

Sleeping closer to the track

Taupō is the farthest of the usual bases. National Park Village is 13.5 km from the Crossing, which means a shorter ride and a later alarm, and its return shuttles are on our National Park Village page. If you are still choosing a town, the where to stay page sets the bases side by side, and the price guide lists what each shuttle costs.

Pick your date with a spare day behind it, then check availability for the Taupō shuttle.

What Taupō Shuttle Riders Say

4.7/5 from 415 verified GetYourGuide hikers

Ratings and review counts are the operators' live figures on GetYourGuide and may shift slightly day to day.

"I stayed in Taupo and this shuttle was just a 10min walk from the pick up point. Both drivers there and back were super friendly and helpful and we were all given a leaflet of information about the crossing, what to expect along the way and who to call if we needed help. This was a great option rather than driving myself. Great communication with updates throughout."

Selina

"Excellent trip, the shuttle was on time & really helpful for info and advice for the hike."
