Tongariro Alpine Crossing: Hike Trail Roundtrip Shuttle

4.7 (882 verified reviews)

About This Experience

This is a return shuttle from National Park Village. A driver collects you from your accommodation in the morning and takes you to Mangatepopo, where the Tongariro Alpine Crossing starts. After you finish at Ketetahi Road, a bus brings you back to the village. It costs $42 per person, and GetYourGuide shows 4.7 from 882 reviews, the most reviews of any crossing shuttle listed there. You sleep in the village, leave the car outside your lodging and never have to think about the one-way track.

The Crossing runs one way, about 19.4 km according to DOC (some operators round it to 20 km). It starts at Mangatepopo at 1,120 m, climbs to Red Crater at 1,886 m and ends at Ketetahi Road at 760 m. Summer walkers usually need 7 to 8 hours, and DOC suggests allowing 9 in winter. In summer DOC provides no parking at Mangatepopo for people doing the full Crossing, so a bus to the start is the practical way in.

The listing says to check availability for starting times. The operator's own website lists National Park Village departures at 5:45, 7:15, 8:30 and 9:45 am, with return buses from Ketetahi from about 1:30 to 5:30 pm. Timetables change, so confirm your pickup and return times on your voucher. If you expect to walk slowly, aim for an early start and a late return.

Two reviewers describe long waits at Ketetahi: one finished in under five hours and had about two hours to fill, and another found there were few return runs. If you are a fast walker, choose an earlier return than you think you need. A few reviewers also mention an older bus, and two had trouble with communication or a missing 5:45 am pickup, so read your voucher the evening before.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.7/5 by 882 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

We got lucky with the weather, overpacking gear in anticipation of the rain. The shuttle arrived in a timely manner and dropped us to and from our location. The trail was mobbed. It is well laid out and for two fit lads was a good workout. Toilets along the way and areas to take photos / stop for lunch. Hike of a lifetime. I would imagine the trail is extremely dangerous in more severe weather as some sections have very loose rocks / muddy slopes which were thankfully dry for us.

Brilliant walk in pure sunshine. Shuttle bus appeared on time. All good

This walk is truly spectacular. The only issue was with the booking system, initially the site said there were no spaces available, then I went back in and it said there was. It's clear that it linked to different shuttle companies, and each time I went it the prices were different or available spaces. The web site is quiet confusing.
