Tongariro Alpine Crossing: Round-Trip Shuttle Service

About This Experience
This is a return shuttle for walkers staying in National Park Village. A Dempsey Buses driver collects you in the morning at one of seven listed pickup points, drives you to the Mangatepopo road end (DOC puts the village 13.5 km from the Crossing), and brings you back from the Ketetahi end in the afternoon. DOC says there is no summer parking at Mangatepopo for people doing the Crossing, and the track is one-way, so a ride at both ends solves the logistics.
The listing names seven pickup and drop-off points: The Crossing Lodge and Backpackers, National Park Alpine Lodge, Mountain Heights Lodge, the Park n Ride, Schnapps Bar, The Park Hotel Ruapehu and Tongariro Crossing Lodge. The same seven are the drop-off points at the end of the day. A second option on the listing starts from Erua. Your voucher carries your pickup time, and the listing says you choose among several return times.
The walk is about 19.4 km (DOC; some operators round it to 20 km). It climbs from Mangatepopo at 1120 m to Red Crater at 1886 m, then drops to Ketetahi Road at 760 m. Plan on 7 to 8 hours in summer and about 9 in winter. You pass Soda Springs, Red Crater, Emerald Lakes and Blue Lake. DOC lists toilets every 1 to 2 hours, says water on the track is not drinkable, and advises carrying 2 to 3 liters.
The listing has 71 reviews at 4.8 and no low-star reviews to report. It does not print a timetable, because starting and return times appear only after you choose a date. Fast walkers can face a wait at Ketetahi with any scheduled return run, so pick a return time that matches your pace and check the last one before you book.

Amazing! An incredible day! Well marked trail, plenty of toilets. No water facilities so bring all you need for 8 hours hiking. Legs definitely feel it afterwards so make sure your accommodation isn’t too far away and keep your evening free to rest!
