Tongariro Alpine Half Day Guided Group Walk

About This Experience
This is a half-day guided walk with Adrift Tongariro Guiding that covers the first part of the Crossing, up to Soda Springs. It does not complete the Crossing. You meet at 53 Carroll Street in National Park Village for a 20-minute safety briefing, ride about 25 minutes by bus to the Mangatepopo start, walk for about 3 hours with the guide, and ride back. The listing gives 4 hours in total and limits the group to 10.
DOC lists the first 5.4 km of the Crossing as shared with the Soda Springs Walk, a 2-hour return option, so this is the gentler end of the track. The listing says the guide talks about eruptions, geology, plants and animals, and settlement. It mentions mountain buttercups and white foxgloves at the springs, with views toward Ngauruhoe. DOC says water on the track is not drinkable, so bring your own.
At Soda Springs the listing offers a choice: return to the start, or, if conditions and logistics allow, continue to complete the full-day Crossing and see Red Crater, Emerald Lakes and Blue Lake. Ask Adrift before you book how that upgrade works and what it costs. The full-day guided walk is a separate listing at $255. The listing does not say how many people go on to the full day, so treat the upgrade as a possibility and not a plan.
The listing has 26 reviews at 4.8, with one 3-star review that gives no detail. At $198 per person for about 4 hours, it costs more than most shuttles because it includes a guide and small group. If you want Red Crater and the lakes, a shuttle plus your own walk costs far less. Return transfers from Whakapapa Village are available at a surcharge for two or more.

What Travelers Say
Rated 4.8/5 by 26 verified GetYourGuide travelers.
This half day walk is perfect if you want to get some fresh air, see Mount Doom, and still have enough energy for dinner! We had tough weather (end of September) but our guide was so awesome making sure we were safe and taking the best path! We also stopped to take lots of pictures which I really appreciated. I would highly recommended the half day hike to everyone!

Excellent hike; Carlene was a fantastic guide, helpful, knowledgeable and managing the group well. Day began grey and wet but brightened up shortly into the walk and ended with blue skies and lovely weather. Made us feel that we should perhaps have gone on for the full hike (next time perhaps). Thanks Adrift Tongariro Tim
