Tongariro Crossing one-way shuttles: private secure carpark

About This Experience

This is a one-way park-and-ride run by Active Outdoor Adventures. You drive to the operator's private car park near the Ketetahi end, leave your car there, and a shuttle takes you to the Mangatepopo trailhead. After the walk you return to your own car. The listing costs $39 per person and shows 4.3 from 77 GetYourGuide reviews, a lower score than the other park-and-ride listings here, which sit at 4.7 or 4.8.

The listing gives departures at 6, 7, 8 and 9 am and adds that times may vary with demand, so confirm yours on your voucher. DOC says summer walkers usually need 7 to 8 hours, which makes the earlier runs the safer pick if you walk slowly. The listing also describes drivers who speak English, German, French, Italian, Polish and Swedish, and the shuttle ride itself runs about 30 minutes.

The car park has security guards and cameras, according to the listing. Several operators use a private, monitored car park near Ketetahi, and each describes its own as the only one, so treat that claim with care. The private car park business says it reopens for the summer season on 24 October 2026, which is the date of the first bookable price here. DOC itself notes that a private car park is available near the end of the walk.

Reviewers who gave three stars or fewer mention two things. One found the car park staff unhelpful and thought communication was poor. Another said a refund for a weather cancellation had not arrived months later. The listing says the trip may be cancelled for unsafe weather, with a full refund or transfer, so keep your confirmation and message the operator promptly. Neither complaint concerns the walk itself.

What Travelers Say

Rated 4.3/5 by 77 verified GetYourGuide travelers.

It all went smoothly, shuttle left on time, lovely comfy coach. Doug the driver was very friendly and told us interesting and useful information on the 30 min drive. It was really nice to walk back to our own car and not have a time deadline to meet.

Good trip. Communication prior could have been better and I am not even sure we got on the right bus. The driver just called us on to a big bus after the earlier shuttle had left. The driver was excellent and provided good info. I think $60 per person is quite a lot, especially with eight in your party. I also wasn't able to refund one ticket when I tried.

The weather made it impossible to go out, but the company was in touch with us several days before and we updated every few hours right up until the final cancellation the day before. And of course we received a full refund.
