How the Nights Fit Together

A room on the pickup list, a morning ride to Mangatepopo and an afternoon ride back from Ketetahi, as Dempsey Buses' listing describes it.

  1. Book the shuttle, then the room

Reserve the shuttle on GetYourGuide from $51 per person, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Make your free DOC track booking, which shuttle passengers need, then book a room at or near one of the seven pickup points.

  2. Sleep at a lodge on the list

The pickup points include National Park Alpine Lodge, Mountain Heights Lodge, Tongariro Crossing Lodge and The Park Hotel Ruapehu. Buy food the day before, because the village has no cafes or supermarkets open early.

  3. Ride to Mangatepopo

The shuttle collects you in the morning and drives you to the Mangatepopo start, roughly 20 minutes from the village. The listing includes a safety briefing. Your pickup time is on the voucher.

  4. Ride back from Ketetahi

After about 19.4 km and 7 to 8 hours on the track, the shuttle collects you at the Ketetahi end and drops you at the same points. The listing offers a choice of return times; check the last one before you set off.

Where to Stay

Where to Stay for the Tongariro Crossing

National Park Village, Turangi, Taupō, Ohakune and Whakapapa, matched to the shuttles that collect there.

Sleep in National Park Village if you want the shortest ride and the most shuttle choice. Two return shuttles on GetYourGuide collect there in the morning, drop you at Mangatepopo and bring you back from the Ketetahi end in the afternoon. Dempsey Buses’ Tongariro Alpine Crossing: Round-Trip Shuttle Service names seven pickup points in the village, and four of them are lodges listed below. Turangi suits you if you have a car or want a town with shops, and Taupō is the bigger-town option further north. Ohakune has its own return shuttle and the longest drive of the three. Whakapapa Village sits closest to the track, but no GetYourGuide shuttle starts there and the Chateau Tongariro is closed. Drive times on this page are approximate.

Quick picks

National Park Village

The village, also called Waimarino, is 13.5 km from the Crossing by DOC’s figures: about 21 minutes (roughly 19 km) to Mangatepopo and 25 minutes to the Ketetahi end.

Tongariro Crossing Shuttles collects from your accommodation, wherever it is in the village. Its own website lists Crossing departures at 5:45, 7:15, 8:30 and 9:45 am, with returns from Ketetahi from 1:30 pm until 5:30 pm; timetables change, so confirm the time on your voucher. Dempsey Buses costs $51, is rated 4.8 from 71 reviews and picks up at seven named points: The Crossing Lodge and Backpackers, National Park Alpine Lodge, Mountain Heights Lodge, Park n Ride to Tongariro National Park, Schnapps Bar, The Park Hotel Ruapehu and Tongariro Crossing Lodge.

The catch is size. Adrift Tongariro Guiding, based at 53 Carroll Street, notes that the village has no cafes or supermarkets open early in the morning, so buy your trail food the day before.

All four of these places to stay are Dempsey pickup points:

  • National Park Alpine Lodge: private family rooms with shared bathrooms and a shared kitchen, 400 yd from National Park station.
  • Mountain Heights Lodge: six self-contained motel units and four ensuite B&B rooms, with private parking; guests mention shuttle pickup.
  • Tongariro Crossing Lodge: in-room continental breakfast, and you can book Crossing shuttles at the lodge.
  • The Park Hotel Ruapehu: a restaurant and bar on site and free parking, 950 yd from the station.

The National Park Village shuttle page compares the two village shuttles.

Turangi, with Taupō further north

Turangi is 36.7 km from the Crossing by DOC’s figures. The Ketetahi end is about 20 minutes away (roughly 25 km), which makes the town handy for park-and-ride. Mangatepopo is further, roughly 40 minutes, and Backyard Tours allows about an hour for its morning run there, pickups included.

Backyard Tours’ Tongariro Alpine Crossing: Mountain Shuttle Services collects from 15 named points around Turangi for $68. Its first bookable date is 9 November 2026, each booking needs at least two people, and it has only 3 reviews with a 3.9 rating, so there is little public feedback to go on. Active Outdoor Adventures, also based in Turangi, sells return trips from the town on its own website.

These six are all on Backyard Tours’ pickup list:

Taupō is 86.5 km from the Crossing by DOC’s figures, about 1 hour 20 minutes to Mangatepopo and an hour to Ketetahi. Tongariro Expeditions’ Tongariro Alpine Crossing with Shuttle Transfers has a Taupō pickup option at $74, rated 4.7 from 415 reviews. The listing allows an hour’s drive each way, for a day of 8 to 10 hours. Hilton Lake Taupo has a thermally heated outdoor pool and hot tub, lake views, minutes from the town center. Our Taupō and Turangi shuttle page covers both towns.

Ohakune

Ohakune is 48 km from the Crossing by DOC’s figures, about 45 minutes to Mangatepopo and 49 minutes to Ketetahi. Dempsey Buses runs a Tongariro Alpine Crossing: Return shuttle from Ohakune for $62, rated 4.8 from 19 reviews. The listing prints neither its pickup points nor its return times, so confirm both on your voucher; the Ohakune shuttle page has the details. DOC also lists the Ohakune i-SITE (0800 647 483) for booking local shuttles.

  • Ohakune TOP 10 Holiday Park: heated studios and apartments, a hot tub and a BBQ area, 4 minutes’ walk from central Ohakune.
  • Alpine Motel: central heating, cooking facilities and a spa pool, with restaurants and shops within a 5-minute walk.
  • The Powderhorn Chateau: a heated indoor pool and restaurant, 984 ft from Ohakune Station, and a tour desk that books Crossing tours.

Whakapapa Village and the Chateau Tongariro

Whakapapa Village is 10.4 km from the Crossing by DOC’s figures, about 20 minutes to Mangatepopo, and home to the Tongariro National Park Visitor Centre on State Highway 48. None of the GetYourGuide shuttles on this site starts there. The Chateau Tongariro has been closed since February 2023. The government backed its restoration in March 2026 and DOC invited proposals from new operators that April, so treat it as closed.

For a room in the village, Skotel Alpine Resort has a hot tub, restaurant and shared kitchen, about a 20-minute drive to the Crossing, and its listing mentions shuttle booking with pickup from the Skotel. Active Outdoor Adventures lists return trips from the Skotel and Whakapapa Holiday Park on its own website.

With a car: sleep anywhere, park at Ketetahi

You cannot leave a car at Mangatepopo for a full crossing. In summer DOC does not provide parking there for people doing the whole track, and local sources describe a four-hour limit. Drive to the Ketetahi end instead, take a shuttle of about 30 minutes to Mangatepopo and walk back to your car. A private, monitored car park near Ketetahi reopens for the season on 24 October 2026, according to the car park business. Owhango Adventures’ Tongariro Alpine Crossing Shuttle – Park & Ride Ketetahi and Tongariro Expeditions’ park-and-ride option both cost $37. The park-and-ride page compares the shuttles, and the parking guide explains which car park is which.

Booking tips

  • Book the shuttle first, then the room. GetYourGuide shows free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead, so pick a room rate you can cancel too.
  • Keep a spare day. In summer DOC issues a Not Recommended Today advisory at 6 am from the Red Crater forecast, and it counted 70 hazardous-weather-alert days in 2025/26. Our weather and best time guide explains how operators decide.
  • Plan your stay for summer. DOC says shuttles generally don’t run in winter, which it counts as May to October.

The homepage comparison and the which shuttle guide set every shuttle side by side. Read our breakdowns of the village lodge shuttle and the roundtrip shuttle, or check availability for Dempsey’s pickup from the village.

What Riders from the Village Say

Ratings and review counts are the operators' live figures on GetYourGuide and may shift slightly day to day.

"everything was perfect, the shuttle arrived punctual and the driver were very friendly and supportive!"

nadine

"Shuttle service was great, picked up on time at the beginning and end of the crossing. Good explanation of what to expect on the walk and any rules to follow."

Angus

"Amazing! An incredible day! Well marked trail, plenty of toilets. No water facilities so bring all you need for 8 hours hiking. Legs definitely feel it afterwards so make sure your accommodation isn’t too far away and keep your evening free to rest!"

Chloe

"I think timings for the hike are overestimated. Many people were done 1.5-2 hours before the first shuttle back to the town, so it would be great to offer an earlier pickup time from the finish area"
